DESCRIPTION:Towards the construction and equipping of an Activity and Sensory Garden for disabled children and their buddies at Church Stretton.<br />

In Shropshire there are approximately 3000 children ‘registered’ as disabled of whom over half live within a 50 mile radius of the village of Church Stretton. In that whole area there is not one freely accessible play area designed specifically for disabled children.<br />
<br />
In May 2007, The Church Stretton Play Area Group was formed by local residents to raise funds for the creation of a playground costing £80,000 for use by all local children on a piece of land held under the Brooksbury Recreation Ground Charitable Trust by Church Stretton Town Council. The Council donated £50,000 towards the costs and the parents raised a further £30,000, including a substantial grant from The Big Lottery. There is an acute need for a further play area specifically for disabled children and the Council have given permission for this to be created adjacent to the existing playground, within the same Charitable Trust and maintenance agreement, free of charge. <br />
<br />
 The Church Stretton Play Area Group is an entirely independent volunteer group, formally constituted as an adopted sub-committee of the Town Council which audits its accounts and approves its activities.<br />
<br />
The Wooden Spoon Activity and Sensory Garden  will be laid out in the shape of a rugby ball oval covering an area of approximately 500 square metres. The design concept is to ensure inclusivity of children with varying disabilities to include ‘active’ equipment such as a wheelchair roundabout and rocker, Wiggles Bars and wave bridge together with more passive items providing visual and auditory sensory stimulation. All pathways will be wheelchair-friendly and support railings will be installed to aid those children with limited mobility. Raised flower beds with wheelchair access will ensure that no child will feel excluded from the sensory facilities available.
